Rather simple:

General post-apocalyptic stuff goes here. Whether is be nuclear, biochemical or just a plain zombie holocaust, this is the board to discuss things relating to surviving the results of a collapse of civilisation

>>Martin also made a promise to destroy all the records of his dealings with Christian, though he hasn't kept that one—at least not yet. In the back of his garage is a large plastic bin (actually, the hard-sided case of an IBM computer he bought back in 1983) stuffed with every document connected to the Guidestones that ever came into his possession, including the letters from Christian.

How about break in and steal that stuff? ~.o
It's just another kooky thing to me. But it does bring up a testy subject. When the SHTF there are going to be tons of religions and con men up to the challenge of herding the sheep.

Freaky shit! I was just reading about the earth's "Carrying Capacity" and how we are pretty much heading towards an inevitable massive population reduction somehow soon.

Sounds like the fan is turned on and the bucket of shit is waiting to be tossed in.

The Zombie Survival Guide was an alright book but got stupid at some parts.

What would you do to make the book a better survival guide?

well... he claimed the book was supposed to be a comedy... and it was in the comedy section of my bookstore... but the way he actually wrote it wasn't that comedic. It was more like he was trying to be serious, trying to make his own little zombie-world (which he relied upon for his other book, World War Z). So... as a comedic piece, it sucked. And as >>1629 mentioned, it was pretty stupid most of the time.... whether or not you think it should be "taken seriously" the book was just plain bad.

Hmm...I read through my copy and laugh. Many, many, many times.

I guess it just depends on your outlook/experience with survival situations/etc.
>> No. 1647
I think a good deal of the humor is from the absurdity of it. This is a book about zombies, how could it possibly be serious?

Alright. I'm sitting here looking at my movie collection and I'm realizing that I'm lacking in good post apocalyptic movies.

I have the first three Terminator movies. The Mad Max movies, City of Ember, the new version of Death race, Doomsday, And a few movies that might apply such as Titan A.E *having your planet blows up counts as the apocalypse, right?" Though it looses points for being a cartoon.

A lot of these aren't so great, either in concept or execution. But they do all deal with a "collapsed society" or the full-blown end of the world as we know it.
What else do I really need to acquire? I'm mostly trying to think of movie tittles, but book recommendations and so on are also a good idea...

Lets compile a list of the apocalyptic media everyone should have, or at least see/read.

At the fist stages of the end of the world, you will wont 9mm, 38's and 32's. They are the most command calbr. 22' deer rifles will be good to.
You will need to consider 'avalability'. You will also want to collect 'bows/arrows" long befor you need them, or others will have them all, befor you do.

Aren't basic shotgun rounds rather straight-forward to make?

anyway, I think the OP is drunk :p He's saying that you'll want to get hold of 9mm, 38's, 32's and 22' dear rifles as you need to consider availability. Also, collect bows/arrows because everyone else will have/want them.

The problem with bows/arrows is that people these days are pussies and can't shoot an arrow for shit, me included

Since I put one up in /ste/, why not one here? Certainly we need more weapons than they do.

Bonus points for weapons that are.
- Dirty, dusty, rusty, repaired.
- Modified by an amateur.
- Have been used in Post-Apocalyptic media.

Yes, I totally would have the same feeling. In fact whenever a cult pops up all I can think about is how many suckers are in this one? And then when they're proven wrong (again) I smile. It's a little evil, I know but it feels so good when idiots who blindly follow some dude deserve it. Which is always.

I love l4d2. I played l4d and loved that too. It had great storytelling which they accomplished basically through object placement, essentially painting the entire storyline. The game play is great and I love coop, I got used to l4d and now l4d2 on expert is handing me my ass (fucking chargers).

The idea that the environment these 4 random individuals existed would require them to become incredibly badass at not only shooting but understanding how the zombies operated was a big turn on for me (vietnaaaaam!). I wondered if the survivors from these two games had a particularly rough time or if their ordeals were standard fare.

ok, so people say only gold represents real wealth, because it has intrinsic value.
lets say we experience full blown nuclear war/socio-economic collapse/climate change, whatever.
you've got a bunch of gold.
just what the hell do you do with it?
i imagine you could trade a piece of jewelry for whatever. but more to the point, what would that person turn around and do with? exchange it for something else, like it was money?
if all industry, & government collapses, and survival becomes priority one, just who is going to be making use of its 'intrinsic value' as a metal to any significant degree?

now lets say you don't have a bunch of jewelry, lets say you have a gold brick. in the absence of money, what would be fair compensation for a brick of fucking gold?

think of how many bullets there are in the world, giving the significant decrease in population you probably won't have a bullet shortage for decades in which time people would probably have started producing them again giving their sudden value.

gold is not just a shiny metal, it's also incredibly useful, it conducts electricity, does not tarnish, is very easy to work, can be drawn into wire, can be hammered into thin sheets, alloys with many other metals, can be melted and cast into highly detailed shapes, and shields gamma radiation better than lead...

>it conducts electricity, does not tarnish, is very easy to work, can be drawn into wire, can be hammered into thin sheets, alloys with many other metals, can be melted and cast into highly detailed shapes, and shields gamma radiation better than lead

. . . most all of which is only useful in a high-technology society with industrial development advanced enough to take advantage of its features.

Sheets and wire formed from gold is fragile and not useful except for integrated circuit packaging, shielding from high energy EM sources, or other high tech applications.

When SHTF and you are in a low-tech survival-focused environment, other more readily abundant materials will prove much more useful for almost any role gold would also be useful for.

Pound for pound for most uses, aluminium cans will be a MUCH more reliable, and easily worked, source of metal. I have no practice smelting gold...But I've melted down aluminium and cast my own arrow heads with the stuff before. Works fine, though they don't last long.
