1) Discuss designs for objects - toasters, tree houses, whatever!
2) It'd be cool to see if existing designs can be improved upon (serious or as a joke...) or what the results of some tinkering was
3) Pics of any tinkering/modifications you did and their results would be sweet :D
4) If there is a demand for it in the future I'll allow Youtube vids to be embedded too :)

If you were knighted, what would you have on your coat of arms?
I think I would have a ship, with a hammer and saw or anvil, because I am a ship's engineer.

I'm always surprised how many people ask me this question. As well as running the engines that make the ship go, we have to look after electrical generators (to keep the lights on), sewage treatment plant, fresh water generators, air conditioning and all the other bits of machinery that keep the ship running.

I haven't seen any decent mock up of these, or anything that fits the scale in my mind. I'm not even sure I can fathom the size of one of these. Anyone have any ideas or thoughts on a traction city?

We all like to think of grotto's. Secret places were we can hide things, or do things. Some people like to design sex dungeons. Others like to design secret little libraries to store forbidden books. Many people like to design bunkers to survive the apocalypse, while far fewer ever think of a simple, decent place to store there valuables in case of burglary. Secret places have served both minor cults of today and served the now major religions of old, such as Christianity, with underground shrines that would be destroyed if discovered.

Personally, I like to design small secret places to add to custom homes I design. I am starting on my architecture degree soon but dont have access to autocad software, so I have to rough it with weaker programs. I have always wanted to design a huge mansion with some secret areas. Maybe a secret lounge attached to my bedroom that I could sneak into.

tl;dr SECRET PLACE DESIGN.

Pictured is an underground spring and spa. From inside it looks hidden, but sadly from the outside it looks like a giant earth mound.

It sounds like you'd prefer a library filled with whores to a library filled with books.

I always wanted a secret place like something from Myst, with these weird puzzles that you have to figure out before you can get in.

Like the clocktower thing on Myst island, or something.

My friend, ProgeCAD is a free to DL CAD knockoff. Slightly different layout BUT importantly the commands etc are the same and is uses the universal dwg. file types. GET IT, best thing i have ever downloaded.

Also, when it asks you to activate that whole process is free too. I don't have anything to do with that company, just sharing the love.

... All I have are two cheap plastic rings from a vending machine the little girl next door gave me. Unless you want to count my broken wristwatch, it has a chrome expanding band (that depilates my wrist hair).

In this thread I will dump all of the objects I find personally well-designed. (similar to my wallpaper dump in /w/)

I'm interested in how a thing looks so some of these might not be designed well, but are interesting/pleasing to look at.

Old news, I know, but HOLY SHIT that is easily my new favorite aircraft.
It's like a cool plane, an ekranoplan and a hovercraft all in one, which makes it triple awesome.

This structure is CRAP.

Its not big enough! I want to see that entire Island dominated by a 300 story tall statue of FREEDOM. Right now the statue itself is only 150 ft tall, adding up to a total of 300 ft when counting its pedestal.

I am suggesting that we ram ten huge concrete poles into the soil for support, then cover the island in 80 story pedestal and make the statue 100 stories itself, with maybe an additional 25 story arm reaching up. The stature itself should be different too. I am suggesting that we lose the annoying hat and possibly expose her breasts in kinda classical form of nudity but also as a suggestion of nurturing nature. There would also be a Jesus style wreath of thorns, but with olive branches instead. She would carry the torch of freedom which would be shaped like a gladius and (now this may sound crazy) would have a form of glowing memory cloth that would seem like flames but would in fact be a stylized piece of material that reacts to electric signals pumped through it, maintaining a perpetual wavy motion like flames from a fire. The power for the entire facility would come from a closed system of tidal motion paddles (they sway back and fourth with waves and produce energy). This would mean that even when the rest of the city witnesses a power outage, the statue's huge spotlights and fake torch would never go out. I suggest that the spot lights consist of several small spotlights to evenly illuminate the statue and about five massive lights to fire a huge pillar of light into the air, making it visible from miles around.

The original statue will be put on display on the hollowed out inside of one of the feet of the new statue.

Add your own idea's.

OP:
Your new design for Liberty seems very neo-classical in nature. Your description reminds me of Columbia (, not the chick from Rocky Horror, but the female personification of America seen in much post-Civil War and Belle Epoch art). The "crown of thorns, but made of olive branches" would be called a "laurel"--think of the upswept branches in the Cadillac emblem.
At the scale you suggestion--well over a half-mile in height it seems-- the banks of spotlights might have to be mounted in shornline assemblies in both NY and NJ, which could be styled to match the design of the pedestal. Supplying spotlight coverage from the eastern exposure--the wide harbor itself, would present challenges.

How about we use the old statue as part of the new one, it could form a leg, then we could make another leg out of the empire state building, decommisioned US navy warships and world trade center metal scrap. Put a nuclear reactor in the base of it (cooling being nearby after all) make the whole thing moving, so the arms constantly move around.. A gigantic rotating radar dish and there should be gigantic chemical lasers that shoot from the eyes which could take out incomming ICBMs. Oh.. and it should have a gigantic transexual penis that sticks out twice a day and urinates reactor cooling fluids on a pedestal with a koran on it.
