I decided to split the board into two - /sf/ (Science Fiction) and /fan/ (Fantasy).

Why? Well, because the two categories are different. This way, they can develop on their own.

You may notice that in some of the threads, quotes pointing to posts numbers may be incorrect. This is because I've moved the thread from /ssf/ to here and unfortunately, quote numbers don't get updated.

Also, you may notice some /fan/ images in the threads - unfortunately, some threads (especially the image dumps) from the original board have images from both categories in them. I took the "majority rules" approach when deciding where to move them.

Ignore history, say an entire continent of people live in 3rd world conditions because they are either weak/stupid. You are a racist. Please don't say anything else.

Wait, what? Racist?

I never used the phrase "because they were african", did I? Yes I made two sweeping generalisations but yelling racist when someone says what I did is facile. Where is your rebuttal?

Tribal conflict in africa is relatively common and the baddest bastards usually rise to the top. Ergo I said gangsters and conmen. Rhodesia and South Africa treated huge swathes of their population like dirt. Why? Because they could. Because they had and craved power. There is likely a myriad of abhorrent things they did that'll never come to the light of day. And I deplore such abuses of power let alone the mistreatment based solely on what someone was. Unfortunately many african governments do not seem to address the issue of corruption or do so without applying sufficient resources and so it continues. Men seek out the cracks in system in the lust for power. There is a stupidity in overconfidence. As to them being weak? Many are. Without a doubt. But it's not their fault. Deprivation of resources is a key issue among many others. Too weak to fend off tyrants? Yes. What would you do when a posse of armed men appear in your village with the intent to do whatever the hell they liked? Not alot when they're waving AK's about I'd wager. I wouldn't. I'd try to get away I think.

Now, don't get me wrong. I fully understand there are many africans that live in peace, that they live content, happy lives with only day to day worries to bother them. There are nature reserves and places of wonder. There are people as understanding as you or I and plenty capable of progressive, reasoned thinking.

tl;dr Rascist? I hope not.

i'm kind of tired of the modern twitch driven, immediate gratification based, consumer culture, and i'd like to escape into some serious science fiction-- the shit that was written when grownups were dreaming about space exploration and the improvement of human kind and such; something along the lines of asimov's the foundation trilogy, or dan simmons's hyperion cantos. plx recommend.

(also, i don't really want a 100 book space opera, with a lot of drama, and little depth. think stanislav lem, rather then star trek [no offense to star trek fans])

Bleargh, read BattleField Earth like almost 5 times and liked it, then dropped it like the plague after the uproar 2 years ago. I'm seriously considering burning it or just chucking it in the recycling bin or making a doorstop out of it.

I could never get into Asimov's stuff. His stories are interesting, but his characters are all walking plot devices with very little actual "character." As for me, I recommend Octavia E. Butler, particularly her Patternist series, or her Xenogenesis series (recently renamed "Lillith's Brood). She's one of the few African-American sci-fi authors of note, and absolutely phenomenal. Her stuff is more about biology and genetics, but is really fascinating. Stories about what makes us "human." She died in 2005. So sad.

Try Robert Heinlein for old school sci-fi.

File 126785380288.jpg - (33.19KB , 1102x304 , ASP Harkonnen.jpg )
1681
The ASP has been in service for nearly twenty years and is based off of a design that’s even older. Kardhas Weapon Systems who originated the original design has stated that there are only so many ways one can accelerate a projectile to eight percent of light speed and the Kardhas one is reliable. Indeed, the ASP and its predecessors have served as the premier sniper and sharpshooter weapons of the Terran Confederate Marine Core for nearly four hundred years.

The current ASP in service is the known as the Harkonnen II. It is normally limited to about three kilometers or less by sensors, the need to penetrate armor and the fog of battle then any actual range issue the weapons has. Its kenesium rounds contain a small charge of magnetically contained plasma which is exposed upon impact causing massive damage. Like all acceleration weapons though, it is fully capable of firing almost any properly shaped material. Normal load out allows for ten rounds and a power pack allowing for thirty.

File 126785384553.jpg - (60.37KB , 868x600 , GAU19.jpg )
1682
The GAU weapons system is a newer take on an old method, the addition of multiple barrels in old ballistic chemical weapons allowed them to fire at an incredibly increased rate with minimal damage to the weapon. The GAU19 Assault Cannonwas developed in response to the constant marine need for increased stopping power and firing rates.
The idea of the multiple weapon mount has been in use for years in starship combat with but even then it was usually only identical weapons such as the so-called Gatling laser mounts and tribarrle heavy rail guns were considered standard. Working in tandem Shiandar Heavy Industries, Kardhas Weapon Systems and Kase Firearms Manufacturing developed a specialized heavy plasma cannon around which are mounted eight heavy laser weapons similar but far more powerful than the Kase Firearms AR90. The elegance of the design is in the interplay between these weapons systems; first the eight lasers fire, one after the other each dumping their small amounts of generated plasma in a specially designed core which then focuses that waste plasma into a burst from the centrally mounted plasma cannon. This allows for a faster firing rate and a far smaller plasma charge than would normally be needed for a bolt as powerful as this weapon can produce. However the power requirements are still enormous and feed is plugged into the rear underside of the weapon and requires a small plasma core which is good for a thousand shots.
A special mount can be used to make the weapon man portable, but its power requirements and weight limit its mobility in this form.

File 126786076665.jpg - (110.95KB , 1034x700 , TCMC Heavy Assault Armor.jpg )
1684
The Marines currently use the mkIII ‘Devastator’ tactical heavy assault suit which is a heavier version of the Army’s armored personal exo-suit, or APE. The marine version however, is intended only for combat service unlike the APE which is often used in various non-combat roles.
It is equipped with a built-in trio of heavy repeating las guns, twin anti-matter reactors, a primary weapon socket on the right hand and secondary one on each shoulder. Its main weapon mount is configurable to power and operate almost any heavy weapon. Normally this is a gatling mount laser cannon with an underslung micro-rocket launcer but is often switched out for a heavy acceleration gun or a pair of heavy plasma cannons. Variants known as ‘Broadsides’ incorporate a single heavy reinforced weapon mount on the right hand to equip the GAU19 assault cannon which consists of a central heavy plasma cannon and eight las cannons. A pair of missile launchers or rocket pods are usually mounted on the shoulder sockets.

Dollhouse, anyone watch it? I nearly posted this in /cy/ given the technology/memory theme and mechanical upgrades given to Echo throughout the series, but I'm not sure. Lacking the visuals, I don't want to place it there.

Personally, I'm really impressed by Dushka's performance in this, it's the first time she's really earnt her money as an actress rather than a piece of meat, and she really differentiates between each engagement. Moreover, her gradual awakening is performed rather well, indeed her more subtle gestures are a lot better than the scripted, clunky way the show points to Echo's growing self-realisation.

Pic: Amy Acker's clearly the hottest girl in the show, though. Scars all over her face, makes her much hotter.

I suffered through the first six episodes and finally it really picked up for the second half of the season. Personally I found the season final pretty engaging but because it gets a little away from Echo and touches interesting side stories.

I am glad they picked it up for a second season and I am hoping for decent things. :p

I can see that, yea. It reminded me of Firefly actually, in that it had vastly improved by the last episode. Also, apparantly Fox feared another email campaign from Whedon's fans which factors into why it was renewed.

ending of second season was pretty crazy. happy to see an end but it seems like all of whedon work, excluding buffy, cant survive more then a season or two.

So, I was lurking somewhere. And someone made yet another "The Hitchikers guide movie is a really bad adaptation from the books, then again, it seems like it would be really hard to adapt from the books to other media"

Now, this pisses me off for one very simple reason. The books are an adaptation. Of a BBC radio drama. The 'Guide started off as a fucking radio show. The books are a less than accurate portrayal of the "original" storyline, to begin with.

What else do the uninformed assume that piss you the hell off?

I usually run into people thinking the TV series was the original H2G2 work, but yeah, the spirit's still there.
