OP here, still on my search for Steampunk weaponry.

Today I bring you a cultural icon from the 20th century, but was created in the late 19th century (1895), thus making it relevant to our interests.

The "broomhandle" Mauser.

Han Solo aside, this select-fire weapon is one of the first known machine-pistols. An innovation and worthy of our respect as a truly epic 19th century weapon.

That looks like a .22 short.

Not the most deadly round on earth. But It WILL kill, if you hit someone right. The big problem with that gun isn't the bullet, so much as the lack of barrel. It won't shoot strait for more than about..oh. ten-fifteen feet.

Looks like someones idea of a "purse" gun, more than anything. Little guns women and card sharks and the like were prone to carry. Also used as backup weapons....though it's got rare shape to it, and the revolver design is even more rare for that era.

Many irregular cartridges came out of the 1800s, and very few of them survived. While the .22 LR and short were developed around 1850, they weren't anything new.
It wasn't until the late 1800s that the .22 became a standardized cartridge.
Who knows what that knuckleduster fires. The round itself may be lost to the antiquity of time which we love so much.

Check this out, more on this ring (not the same as the one above):

Interior of Lid Marked ''R.M. Waylett, 126, Wigmore St., Portman Square, London W.1'' c. 1870. Designed to fit on the small finger, made for use by ladies, the ''Femme Fatale'' Ring Pinfire Revolver marked on ring body FEMME FATALE, and measures 1 7/16-inches in overall length; 7-shot cylinder, approximately .06 caliber pinfire; 5/6-inch long round and smoothbore cylinder, operating on pepperbox principle (without barrel); tiny hammer cocked with fingernail, tiny knurled trigger pushed inward to fire; ring of German silver; balance of parts blued steel, except for browned trigger; engraved leaf motif embellishment on 4/5 circumference of ring.

A BB is .177 caliber. A lot depends on velocity; for example, the caliber .17HMR round can take down a coyote without any trouble. However, that has a huge charge of powder behind it for the size; this ring would never be able to affect anything other than a parrot maybe, if you punched it in the face at the same time as shooting it. A bullet generally has to have 10-14 inches worth of flesh penetration power before it can cause a decent amount of trauma.

OP here, I have an encyclopedia of 19th century firearms (aint that a find, eh?) but there's remarkably little information on this revolver outside that it's Belgian and fired a rimfire cartridge that was relatively ineffective against any targets outside of a burrow of rabbits.

In an ideal situation, I wish to acquire the blueprints for this revolver and rebuild it with the help of two gunsmith friends of mine in .22LR, which although small - is nothing to be trifled with and would make for a very fun gun to shoot.
I see no reason why the design couldn't be scaled up, improving reliability of the firing mechanism, and made to fire a centerfire cartridge around the caliber of .38/9mm.
>> No. 649
>648

While re-building it with modern gunsmithing skills and materials would be good, and changing it to a center fire device....I gotta say, if you want it to be functional, upping the bullet size would require you to reduce the number of rounds. A .22LR is good for most situations, if your gun and hand are accurate.

I've actually linked this tread a few times, and there's been a big debate over what steampunk weaponry really is.

Is it the simple mechanism but the elegance?
Is it a complex mechanism but a rugged design?

I think both. Certainly can be both. The 19th century (and early 20th, which is Edwardian, technically) yielded some of the best weapon designs ever.

Remember, you can't arm an airship as well with cannons nearly as well as you can with gatling guns and howitzers.
Weapons are my favorite part of Steampunk, I just wish there was more attention on them instead of...teapots...
>> No. 1064
I like the idea of steampunk style weapons. However as with most steampunk ideas...it's decorative, not functional.

my dad had a amazing double barreled shotgun. Gold work on the stock, the barrel, the works.

It was shot out and wasn't safe to fire...but it was just a shotgun. Nothing special.

unless you consider an electric bulb an electronic device, of course. but that would be silly.

when electric boiler was mentioned, he probably meant a boiler equipped with a simple resistor underneath used to heat the water through the process of resistive heating, much like electric showers and electric irons. it doesnt imply the use of any electronic devices at all.

Austrian Steyr-Hahn 1911/1912.
Externally resembles a Browning tipping barrel design, but uses a completely different lockwork and breeching.

Where the Browning would have interlocking lugs in the barrel and slide to effect locking, this design uses a rotating barrel operated by a campath in slide and frame to effect breeching.

A very well made and elegant design that chambered a reasonably powerful cartridge for it's day.

From the clip it looks WWI as I remember a Television show that was showing WW weapons and it touched about how to see what you had left in amunition and a clip as such was tried and thrown out because it cause jamming, and it was the worst type of clip to have in the trenches though it was a different rifle the clip on the rifle that had the same cutting was a half circle and it was two clips ..it was an interesting design that didn't work out if I find the picture of the one I'm thinking of I'll post it so you can see but it's a rifle that would have had major jamming issues is all I can say about it so I would research rifles that didn't work well in the trenches and you should strike lucky unless they just changed the clip design.

Clip =/= Magazine. (pic VERY much related)

And it would be pretty obvious that cutting a hole in the side of the magazine would let in dirt and shit, thus increasing the rate of jamming.

What strikes me as odd about that is that the shape of the magazine gives it away as perhaps being much older. It doesn't seem entirely like something that would come out of WWI in my opinion. A semi-auto rifle with a curved detachable box magazine?
That seems like something out of the end of WWII.

>>1263
.50BMG? Not at all, maybe you misread 8x50mmR Lebel.

The Chauchat was actually one of the worse weapons in WWI, far inferior to the Hotchkiss which the French also had. However, the Chauchat was cheap and easy to produce.

Also heard a rumor you could turn it into a still.

And yes as the program went it spoke of it being just a horrible weapon..but when I looked the weapon up it came up as 50Cal. but the one I had seen on the program was for fact not what was brought up through a web search....but making a still out of one...looking at it, it's not out of the realm of possibility XD

Don't feel like deleting everything but I did look it up again..and with the name of it ...damn what I was looking at were I forgot I found it ...ya. ...there's no 50 Cal. >.> though I must say I would love to own one I like how it looks ...as well as OP's picture I want that as well.. XD

As a combat weapon, yes the chachaut was pretty well damned by it's shoddy construction, and the autoloader unfriendly design of the 8mm lebel cartridge.

But oh my are they fun to shoot as a Curio and relic. Modern lubricant and lots of TLC makes them far more reliable than they likely were in WW1, and the sheer oddness of them draws a crowd.

Well,1919 barrel was cheap, I had everything else(was previously chambered in 7x57 Mauser) and I wanted to build a long distance rifle. 1:10 twist rate on barrel will carry a 168 Grain Sierra Matchking down range rather nicely. Plus its unique and beautiful in a ugly way. next step is bipod, optics and a fully bent bolt. Then thread the last 1/2" or so of the barrel for a suppressor.

I consider steampunk to expand into the Edwardian era, and as of such I made a point to - for the ones that are 20th century - to not go past WWI (with very few exceptions). The ones that are from the Edwardian era, I found certain qualities that would work.

Most of the ones you probably think are WW2 actually come from the late 1800s. And the majority of the ones posted are far older than WW1 anyways.

Besides, I consider steampunk to be a form science fiction, look into complexities of the design. If brass inlays mean that much to you...

Are we restricted to firearms in this thread? If not, here's a British WW1-era tank (not sure about the precise designation).

The .223 pistol from fallout was designed after Deckard's blaster from Blade Runner. It's an easter egg that nobody ever gets.

Also, behold the Mateba 6 Unica. Gas-operated semi-automatic revolver that fires from the bottom chamber of the cylinder. Awesome.
